Claude Code settings guide

Claude Code (CLI) · Agentic CLI · Full Repo

Token burn
Medium burn

Moderate; a few settings changes save money. Last reviewed April 2026; plans and model names change often, so check the tool's own pricing page before you buy.

1

Create a CLAUDE.md file in your project root — it's Claude Code's persistent memory system, loaded automatically at the start of every session.

2

Use /add-dir to add only the specific folders Claude Code needs — adding the entire repo for small tasks burns API tokens unnecessarily.

3

Use 'claude --continue' to resume the last session — avoids re-establishing context and saves the tokens it takes to re-explain your project.

4

Run bash commands with ! prefix (e.g. !npm test) — Claude Code can see the output and fix failures automatically in the same session.

5

Use compact mode (/compact) periodically in long sessions — it summarizes conversation history to free up context window without losing important context.

6

Combine Claude Code with git: 'claude commit' generates semantic commit messages from your changes — saves time and keeps history clean.

7

Use multi-agent mode for parallel tasks: run two terminal windows with Claude Code, each working on a different feature branch simultaneously.
