What it is
Google describes Search Console as a free service that helps you monitor, maintain and troubleshoot your site's presence in Google Search. You do not need it to appear in results, but it is the only place where Google tells you directly how it sees your site. You need a Google account and a recent browser.
What you can see
- Whether Google can find and crawl your site.
- Indexing problems, with the option to request re-indexing of a new or updated page.
- Search performance: how often your site appears, which searches show it, and how often people click.
- Alerts about indexing, spam or other issues.
- Which other sites link to yours.
Your first three steps (our advice)
- Add your website as a property and verify that you own it. Google's help page links to a separate guide for the exact steps.
- Submit your sitemap in the Sitemaps report. Remember that a sitemap is only a hint, but it helps Google discover your pages.
- Open the performance report and note which searches already show your site. Write down the numbers for today so that you can compare in a month.
Verifying your website can also help with your Business Profile, because Google says some profiles can be verified instantly when the website is verified with Search Console.
A weekly five-minute check
Look for new alerts, for pages Google could not index, and for any big change in clicks. If you publish a new page or fix an old one, you can ask Google to look at it again. Do not panic over small day-to-day changes; look at weeks, not days. Many owners open the tool once, feel lost and never return. Avoid that by choosing one question per visit, such as which searches brought people this week, and ignoring the rest until you are comfortable. Ask whoever built your site to add you as an owner so you are never locked out of your own data.
What it will not do
Search Console will not rank you higher by itself. It shows you what is happening so you can fix real problems, such as a page blocked by mistake or a missing sitemap. For local ranking, your Business Profile and reviews still matter most.
Add and verify your website in Search Console this week.
